남아서 지키는 사람, 버리고 떠나는 사람

정가의 철새라는 말이 있다. 이념이나 정책과 상관없이 편의에 따라 당적을 바꾸는 정치인을 뜻한다. 더 말해 무엇하랴. 철새는 그저 철새일 뿐이다. 그들에게는 대의, 명분, 신념보다 자신의 이익이 우선한다. 남사스러울 정도로 뻔뻔하게 옷 갈아입듯 정체성을 바꿔 입는 장사꾼이다.  그런 이에게 우리의 미래를 맡길 순 없는 노릇이다.

그런데 정가의 메뚜기라는 말도 있다. 평소에 고향을 등한시하다가 선거철만 되면 갑자기 나타나 유난스레 고향 사랑을 떠들어대며 지연을 자신의 얄팍한 상술에 이용하는 정치인을 의미한다. 오랜 시간 꾸준히 쌓은 묵직한 신뢰 같은 건 정가의 메뚜기에게 없다. 그저 손쉬운 당선을 목적으로 고향과 고향 사람들을 자기 욕심의 제물(祭物)로 삼고자 할 뿐이다. 우리나라 정치계의 고질적 병폐 중 하나이다.

정가의 메뚜기는 실상 고향을 아랑곳하지 않는다. 모르쇠로 일관하며 고향을 무시하고 일신의 영달만을 좇다가 아쉬워지면 고향에 찾아와 온갖 너스레를 떤다. 고향을 방문하자마자 문중 어르신, 동네 원로들, 학교 동창을 찾아 그간 몸은 떠나 있었지만, 마음은 함께였다는 둥, 지역발전을 위해 희생하고자 내려왔다는 둥, 정가의 메뚜기들은 거의 예외 없이 정형화된 레퍼토리를 읊어대며 고향을 휘젓고 다닌다. 그것도 책임지지 못할 비현실적 선심성 공약을 남발하면서 말이다. 중앙 고위 권력자와의 친분으로 자신을 거창하게 포장하고, 화려한 이력을 들먹이면서 사람들의 눈을 흐리게 만들고 결국 허황된 환상 속으로 빠뜨리고 만다. 뭐든 다해줄 것처럼 큰소리 치지만, 주민들에게 목적한 바만 취하고 나면 메뚜기처럼 풀썩 뛰어올라 어디론가 사라져 버린다.

그런 이들을 볼 때면, 나는 이렇게 말하고 싶다. 고향은 마음이 아니라 몸으로 함께해야 하는 곳이라고. 당신의 그 가벼운 입놀림은 고향을 아끼고 돌보았던 착실한 시간들을 모욕하고 있다고. 고향 사람들을 우습게 여기는 것과 다름없는 언행을 멈추라고. 근거도, 현실성도 없는 허황된 환상으로 고향 사람들을 현혹하지 말라고.

진심은 무겁다. 진심은 떠돌지 않는다. 진정성은 오랜 시간 붙박인 그 자리에 지워지지 않는 흔적으로 남는다.

사심은 가볍다. 경박스레 움직이며 눈앞의 이익만을 따른다. 자기 이외에는 아무도 사랑할 줄 모르고, 이용 대상만을 필요로 한다. 그렇게 어슬렁거리다가 단물만 빨아먹고 자취를 감춘다.

누구나 개인 사정은 있다. 주거 이전의 자유도 있다. 그렇다고 해서 사심이 진심이 되는 것은 아니다. 그렇다고 해서 깃털이 하루아침에 뿌리가 되는 것은 아니다. 금세 뛰어올라 어딘가로 사라질 메뚜기는 우직하게 논밭을 가는 황소의 무게를 지닐 수 없다. 잇속만 차리고 그렇게 떠나가 버리는 메뚜기에게 고향을 잊고 지내는 일은 너무나도 쉽다. 메뚜기는 그저 한 철이다.

물론, 연고가 전혀 없던 지역의 발전을 위해 동분서주하고, 지역 사랑을 키우며 가꾸고자 애쓰는 진실한 정치인들이 아예 없는 것은 아니다. 그렇지만, 그간 한국의 정치사를 혼탁하게 만들고 지역발전의 발목을 잡는 데 철새 정치인과 메뚜기 정치인이 한몫해 왔다는 것은 부정할 수 없는 사실이다.

지역민의 마음은 상상만으로 알 수 있는 것이 아니다. 같이 호흡하고 같이 생활하고 같이 울고 웃었던 세월, 공유된 경험, 힘을 합해 함께 일했던 기억, 지역과의 일심동체화, 지역 현장에 무르익은 이력이 지역민의 마음을 꿰뚫게 하는 법이다. 그렇게 공들여 지역을 살피고 아끼고 가꾸면서 뚜벅뚜벅 한 길만을 걸어온 후보를 우리는 제대로 알아봐야 한다.

호화로운 허상에 분별력을 잃어서는 안 된다. 우리 지역의 조강지처를 우리 스스로가 아껴야 한다. 지역에 일부종사한 지고지순한 일꾼이 누구인지를 올바로 알아봐야 한다. 그런 후보는 유권자를 모실 줄 안다. 그런 후보라면 우리의 정치적 힘을 귀중하게 위임받아 이곳의 삶과 사회를 진일보시키는 데 사력을 다할 것이다.

The years of breathing together, living together, crying and laughing together, shared experiences, memories of working together, unity with the region, and a history of ripening in the local field penetrate the hearts of local residents. We must properly recognize the candidate who has followed a single path while carefully examining, caring for, and nurturing the region.

We must not lose our discernment in luxurious illusions. We must take care of our region's resources. We need to find out who the noble and honest workers working in the region are. Such a candidate knows how to attract voters. Such a candidate will entrust our political power with great care and will do his best to advance life and society here.
