유영하 변호사의 대구시장 출마와 박근혜 전 대통령의 지지

대구 시장 선거에 유영하 출마에 뒷 말이 많다. 이유는 박근혜 전 대통령의 후광을 업고 출마한 것에 대한 비판이다. 그의 출마를 지지하는 박근혜 전 대통령에 대한 비판 여론이 상상을 초월한다. 필자가 만나 본 과거 친박 활동을 하던 열혈지지자 중에도 박근혜의 유영하 지지에 대해서 비판의 수준이 상당함을 보고 있다. 첫 번째 이유는 대구시민들의 심정적인 지지를 받는 전직 대통령으로 처신에 문제가 있다는 것이고 둘째는 자신이 어렵고 외로울 때 유영하 변호사가 곁에 있어서 도움을 받았다는 박 전 대통령의 발언에 이해하지 못하겠다는 지지자들의 강변이 있었다.

유영하의 출마를 바라보는 대구시민의 심정은 복잡하다. 존경하고 사랑하는 박근혜 전 대통령을 봐서는 유영하 변호사를 선택하는 것이 의리상의 문제라고 보는 사람이 있고 고향으로 내려 온 지 얼마 되지 않아서 현실 정치에 개입하려 한다는 비판도 있고 무엇보다도 유영하 후보 개인에 대한 호, 불호가 존재하는 것으로 보인다. 유영하 후보는 일찍이 경기도 군포에서 출마했고 변호사 활동도 경기도에서 했으니 그가 지자체장에 출마하려 했으면 경기도지사나 군포시장직이 어울리는 자리였을 것이다. 그런데 대구를 택한 것은 박근혜 대통령의 지원을 받기 위함이라는 것을 누구나 짐작할 수 있는 문제였다. 

박 전 대통령은 힘들고 어려울 때 많은 국민이 걱정하고 격려하고 진심으로 응원했다는 사실을 알았으면 한다. 누구든 만날 수 있었다면 만나서 위로하고 아픔을 함께 할 사람들이 차고 넘쳤다는 것을 이해해야 한다. 그런데 유영하 변호사를 지지하는 이유가 자신의 곁에서 도움을 주었다는 것이다. 물론 지금까지 오는 과정에 유 변호사가 큰 역할을 했다는 것은 부인할 수 없다. 가장 최근에는 사저를 구입하고 이사하는 과정에서 가장 큰 도움을 받은 것도 잘 알고 있다. 많은 국민은 도움을 주고 싶어도 도움을 줄 수 없는 이유가 박 전 대통령과 접촉할 수 없었던 환경 탓이라고 말하고 있다. 유영하 변호사를 통해야만 소통할 수 있었던 구조적인 문제가 있어 그가 박근혜 전 대통령을 독점적으로 보호하고 있었다는 말도 나오는 실정이다.

박근혜 전 대통령은 공과 사를 정확하게 하지 못해 탄핵의 빌미를 제공한 것을 기억해야 한다. 특별히 사적 인연을 중시했던 이유로 최순실을 곁에 두었고 그로 인해 정치 인생을 망친 사실을 국민은 알고 있다. 유영하와 인연 때문에 후원회장을 맡은 것은 이해한다고 해도 공식적으로 지지를 말하는 것은 잘못된 것이라고 지적하고자 한다. 대구는 특정인에 편향적인 전직 대통령이 되는 것을 바라지 않을 것이다. 누가 대구시장이 되어도 박근혜 전 대통령을 따뜻하게 불편함이 없이 모실 것인데 특정인을 편드는 행위는 바람직한 일은 아니라고 본다. 박 전 대통령의 유영하 변호사에 대한 지지 발언은 이미 많은 국민의 지지하는 마음을 돌려놓았다고 보인다.
